Farmers Insurance Open History

The Farmers Insurance Open was founded in 1952, 73 years ago, and was known as the San Diego Open until 1985. For sponsorship considerations, the prefix was changed.  Title sponsors were introduced in 1981: Wickes for two years and Isuzu for three.  Shearson Lehman Brothers became the title sponsor in 1986.  Buick took over in 1992, followed by Farmers Insurance in 2010.  The event is organized by the Century Club of San Diego.

The San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista hosted the inaugural tournaments in 1952 and 1953.  In 1955, the tournament was held at Mission Valley Country Club in San Diego; in October 1956, it was transferred to Singing Hills Country Club in El Cajon.  Mission Valley hosted the tournament from 1957 to 1963.  Mission Valley changed its name to Stardust Country Club (now Riverwalk Golf Club) in 1962.  After a 1964 event at the Rancho Bernardo Country Club (now Rancho Bernardo Inn) in San Diego, it returned to Stardust for three years, until 1967.

Format of Farmers Insurance Open 2025

The Farmers Insurance Open 2025 will be played in stroke play, with each player’s total strokes being tallied.  The competition lasts for four days, with one round of competition every day, for a total of 72 holes.  The top 65 players on the leaderboard—including ties—move on to the next round after the conclusion of the two stages.  The Torrey Pines Golf Course’s South and North courses host the opening two rounds.

Every hole has a par score, meaning that the lower the number of permissible strokes, the higher the score.  If a player completes the entire hole in the bare minimum of strokes, they obtain a birdie or an eagle; if they take more strokes, they receive a bogey or worse.  A sudden-death playoff is held for the victor if there is a tie score at the end of the last round.  The PGA FedExCup Points system includes this tournament, and the winner will get the maximum number of points and cash.

Farmers Insurance Open 2025 Course

The Torrey Pines Golf Course’s North and South courses will host the Farmers Insurance Open in 2025. Since the late 1960s, it has been held at Torrey Pines. The event is often held in January or February, with the South Course hosting the last two rounds and both courses hosting the first two rounds.

The 36-hole Torrey Pines Golf Course is a municipal golf course owned by the city of San Diego, California. It is situated on the beachfront cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the La Jolla area, just south of Torrey Pines State Reserve. During World War II, it was built on the site of Camp Callan, a U.S. Army base.

William Francis Bell, the son of famed course architect William Park Bell, designed the two 18-hole golf courses at Torrey Pines, North and South. Redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001, the South Course is 7,802 yards (7,134 meters) from the back tees and has a par of 72. In order to enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the ocean at the finish of the round, Tom Weiskopf redesigned the North Course in 2016 and moved the nines.
